Title: Lucky,
Pairing: Shaun/Zach
Rating: PG-13
Word Count: 1473
Summary: Cody gets into a fight at school and Zach wants to know why.
Authors Note: In my head this is set eight years after the film, making Cody about 13 – I just basically wanted to see what he would think of their relationship as he became a teenager and this is what I ended up with.

“So are you going to tell me what all this is about?” Zach scolded as Cody sat, hands clenched together on his lap, mouth set in a defiant line.

“Principle Bates has already told you.”

“No, she told me you punched one of the boys in your class and that you wouldn’t say why… that’s not like you Cody. What the hell happened?” Zach couldn’t decide if he was more angry or concerned, never in the eight years since they’d moved to L.A had he been called into school for anything other than praise for his nephew. Cody wasn’t aggressive or having any problems inside (or outside for that matter) of school as far as the older man knew, and yet here he was, sat outside the Principle’s office after a phone call to tell him Cody had been fighting.

“Darren is just a jerk…” the boy said, his tone hinting at something more.

“I know you Cody. You wouldn’t punch someone just for being a ‘jerk’, its better if you just tell me the truth now.” Zach’s ‘parent’ voice was firmly in place, it wasn’t often that they needed to discipline Cody, but when they did it was always Zach who took over because Shaun was well and truly the worlds biggest push over. The boy sighed, and shook his head once.

“Cody, I can’t help you sort this out if you won’t tell me…”

“He called you and Shaun a pair of fucking fags alright? I don’t care if you say two wrongs don’t make a right – I wasn’t gonna stand by and let him say that about you.” Zach was shocked enough to let the curse slide, and then he felt something akin to pride fire up in his belly – Cody wasn’t ashamed of them, in fact he was proud enough to literally fight for them. The mature part of Zach’s brain told him this wasn’t exactly a good thing, but still he could hardly reprimand the boy for sticking up for his – for lack of a better word – parents.

“Why didn’t you just tell the teacher that? Then he’d be sat here as well, instead of you taking all the blame.” Zach didn’t really know what else to say, if it had been him in this position fifteen years ago he probably would have done exactly the same as Cody, but he couldn’t exactly admit this to his nephew whilst trying to set a good, mature example to the boy. Cody just shrugged, looking down at his fingers and picking absently at his nails, a nervous habit he’d had for years which instantly made Zach aware there was more to this.

“What else did he say Codes?” the boy continued to look down, a faint blush tingeing his cheeks which showed an uncharacteristic display of vulnerability.

“Codes look at me. You know you can tell me anything.”

“He said that I’d end up the same – that we’re a big family of fags.” Zach cringed as that word passed his nephews lips again, before looking into his eyes, the question he was about to ask making him more than a little uncomfortable.

“Do you fancy guys Cody?”

“WHAT? NO! I like girls!” the boy was indignant and clearly embarrassed as the words left his mouth a few decibels too loud.

“Well there you go then, not that it matters to me who you like obviously, but as long as you know the truth, it doesn’t matter what some loud mouth little shit thinks okay?”

----

Zach sighed heavily as he crashed onto the couch - it’d been a long day at the school with Cody, trying to get him to tell the principle what that little bastard had said to antagonise him. When eventually the teacher knew the whole story, she’d been apologetic about the whole thing, but it didn’t make the situation any less maddening or exhausting. Zach wasn’t used to having to deal with drama at Cody’s school, nor was he used to his life style affecting his nephew. But it made sense really, he was getting older and teenagers were heartless little shits – he’d been one himself not too long ago.

“Where’s Shaun tonight?” Cody’s voice broke him from his reverie and he looked up, taking in his nephew’s tall frame, legs and arms slightly gangly, hair shorter than it used to be. When had the little boy he used to tuck up in bed grown up? Zach wasn’t sure, but it made his heart pang a little that it was no longer okay for him to read the boy bedtime stories and kiss him good night.

“He’s probably still at work, the book release is next week and you know how manic it gets. He should be back soon though.”

“Well tell him I said goodnight okay? I’ve barely seen him this week.”

“Okay buddy.”

“Night Uncle Zach.” The boy waved his hand vaguely, and headed toward the living room door. It wasn’t quite his curfew, but Zach guessed he wanted a bit of time on his own after the day they’d had.

“Night Codes.” Zach closed his eyes for a moment, but opened them again when he didn’t hear the living room nor the bedroom door close. Cody was still standing in the doorway, looking sheepish.

“I… I’m sorry about today. For what Darren said. But I’m not sorry I hit him. I’m not ashamed of you and Shaun you know.” Zach was taken aback slightly by the speech and then his smiled, wide and genuine. He didn’t care what the rest of the world thought – so long as Cody was okay with him, with Shaun, with their life… then that was all that mattered.

“You don’t have to apologise. And I wouldn’t have been sorry if I was in your position. I’m so proud of you Cody.” That was as much serious talk as the younger boy could deal with and he hastily retreated to his bedroom after a brief smile and nod at his uncle, his father, his guardian, his best friend.

---

It was at least another hour before the front door finally closed behind Shaun, he’d been out for a good twelve hours mostly trying to pin down a schedule for his upcoming book release and subsequent publicity tour and all he wanted to do was kiss Zach and curl up in their bed together. Of course the moment he saw his partners face he could see his day had been far from rosy, so instead he climbed onto the too small sofa and pulled Zach into his embrace, kissing his temple lightly.

“Rough day?” he asked, already knowing the answer, but it gave his boyfriend an opening to explain what’d happened. Zach told Shaun all about the phone call from the principle, the fight, the conversations with Cody and his admission that he wasn’t ashamed of them, by the time he was finished Shaun was sat with a small smile on his face.

“We’ve raised one awesome kid you know Zach” he stated matter of factly, his stomach clenching in pride at the revelation that their son (because that’s what Cody was, regardless of blood or names on a birth certificate) would defend their honour like that. Sure, just like Zach he wasn’t pleased that Cody had been fighting or getting in trouble, nor did he expect the boy to guard them from some teenagers ignorant words, but the fact of the matter was he had done all of those things, and Shaun just couldn’t find it in him to be mad.

No more words were said about it, but much later after clothes had been shed, bodies entangled and sweaty on their bed, Zach propped himself up on one elbow and gazed down at Shaun, his eyes drinking in the sight of his lover. It didn’t matter that they’d been together for practically a decade – every time he looked down at that face and saw complete love shining back at him Zach always had a sense of ‘how the fuck did end up here?’

“I’m so lucky to have you. And Cody.” Zach mumbled, not breaking the quiet atmosphere that surrounded them.

“No, we’re lucky to have you.” Shaun rectified, sealing the statement with a kiss and preventing any arguments. It was true, Zach had saved him from himself and inadvertently became Shaun’s muse. And as for Cody, his actions spoke louder than any words could, though it was always clear for anyone to see – he worshiped Zach, and Shaun too, but his affections we’re never quite equal, and that was fine because after all he could hardly blame the boy for adoring his uncle.

The kiss ended naturally and made way for sleep to come, but not before Shaun mumbled the words ‘so fucking lucky’ into Zach’s hair.
