For me, it's the pillow talk scene where Shaun initially brings up the idea of Zach leaving with him but Zach is at a point where he can't even consider it a possibility. Their talk meanders the way pillow talk does from Shaun's imminent departure to Zach being able to accept a compliment but underneath it all is the two of them trying to figure out a way to stay together - just like they are - and unable to come up with any real answer. When Zach accepts his compliment and caresses Shaun's cheek I love it when Shaun catches Zach's hand and holds it to his chest. The whole scene has a beautifully unscripted feel to it but that gesture is just heart stopping. Side note: during the montage scene that precedes this one where Zach and Shaun are in bed and Zach is laughing it looks like they used the end of this scene with Shaun still holding Zach's hand and squeezing it and saying god knows what to make Zach beam like that. ::sigh::

Have I mentioned I love the pillow talk? *smile*

Date: 2008-06-13 08:40 pm (UTC)Oh me, too. There is such a strong sense of comfort between them. I know the focus of the film is on Zach but I think they both needed someone to find comfort (shelter?) in.
And that one part on the montage, where Zach walks out on the balcony and Shaun turns around and they kiss...*sigh*
Thank you so much for reminding me of this scene. I had this thought the first time I saw it that Zach had just woken up from some post coital wonderfulness and he immediately goes padding out heavy-footed to look for Shaun and give him a kiss. They could have let that scene run on and on and I would've loved it.
p.s.
I'm looking at your icon of Zach and Shaun sharing those small kisses and OMG look at Shaun! He is drunk on them. So beautiful ...

That balcony scene, seriously, I've ran a thousand scenarios through my head from just after to just before to just hangin around...all of them make me melt.
Just as much as that look on Shaun's face just before he kisses him for the first time...it KILLS ME.
Shaun is drunk on them...heck, I am too!! *smile*

Date: 2008-06-13 10:17 pm (UTC)It's like he was half expecting Zach to throw is hand off his chest as part of their rough-housing and then when he realizes Zach wants him to kiss him ... I think I forgot to breathe - again.

Date: 2008-06-14 02:01 am (UTC)You know why that scene is different..it's because it's supposed to show how your memory changes things a little bit..I loved that that was the explination the director gave in the commentary (I sort of wished that that part was put into the first kiss scene, the way he touches his face..it makes me swoon)

Date: 2008-06-13 08:48 pm (UTC)I think it's so cool that even though they never say "I love you" that no one ever seems to doubt that they do. That montage really took any doubt away. I also love how the montage showed that Zach's relationship with Shaun has an effect on Zach even when they're not together. His art opens up and he becomes this playful and vibrant uncle to Cody. Such a great scene!

Date: 2008-06-13 11:34 am (UTC)But, if I had to *g*, I'd go with this one *points to icon* their first kiss. I love how slow it seemed to happen, and the way Shaun reaches out and touches Zach. *sigh*

That searching hand: Is this OK? And Zach just holding him with this look. I also love how Shaun sets his hand over Zach's heart when they kiss. You can imaging that Zach's heart is just pounding away under his palm. Aye dios mio! ::bites fist::

Date: 2008-06-13 02:46 pm (UTC)BUT.... if I have to choose, I pick the whole first kiss scene. The way Shaun understands Zach's art is so sweet. I love the way they turn use the way guys typically rough-house as a way to touch each other and flirt. And then the way they look at each other right before the kiss.... DED. And the tiny smile that creeps onto Zach's face right before the scene ends is just so adorable!!

Date: 2008-06-13 09:32 pm (UTC)The first kiss was so perfectly played out. I'm still amused at how Zach seems to pull Shaun over him when they're rough-housing and then seems reluctant to let him go when it ends. And that big laugh! There has to be a lot of emotion - including happiness - that wants to be let out.
And then the way they look at each other right before the kiss....
I love that split second moment when Shaun finally realizes that Zach wants him to kiss him. His gum smacks a little like he lost track of it and then he's moving over for those wonderful kisses.
.... DED.
Oh me, too ...

Date: 2008-06-13 08:23 pm (UTC)Jesus, just thinking about that whole scene makes me tremble. It's so damn gorgeous, sweet and sexy. Love the precious music, the intense light, the unique bright colours, the slow pace, the eroticism of those powerful glances full of love.
Lazy Days scene is one of the most special ever!!!**sigh** I'm so swooning.
Much love.

Date: 2008-06-13 09:58 pm (UTC)I was just telling
... and above all, the deeply precious moment when Zach kisses Shaun's chest, then Shaun's ear and neck and then he rests his head in the hollow between Shaun's neck and shoulders.
So much intimacy and comfort in that scene. And I mean this in the best way possible but they both look drunk on it. Very powerful ...
I'm so swooning.
Hermanita, you are not alone. ::big grin::

Date: 2008-06-14 01:44 am (UTC)But after the part where they show Zach painting the mural...and they show that tender kissing..and the feather touching or not even touching of the lips...COLOR ME DEAD...see, that's the tenderness I love.
But the balcony scene still just gets me, I think it's because too..you really can't see what's going on there...that and when they are sitting on the edge toward the end of it...and you can just barely see the part where Zach puts his arm around Shaun and sort of pulls him over..I love that part too.
But those kisses, the smiles at the beginning, the hanging around, the balcony, and the part where Shaun must be reading something and then looks up at what has to be Zach's face.
Like I said, the whole montage makes me melt.
I'm so glad the director decided to put that in, he made one hell of a great decision, he calls it the "big gay montage" in the commentary.

Date: 2008-06-13 10:51 pm (UTC)Another one that always gets to me is in the montage when they are in a bar just talking and smiling at each other. I find that scene really intimate and they are not even touching - it's not only the physical thing that connects them, they are friends first and foremost, they seem so at ease with each other, just enjoying being together - lovely!
And I love love love the balcony scene as well. Someone has to write a one shot about it, I know I need to read it LOL
Can I say how much I adore this movie? I'm a long time BBM addict and Shelter helped my broken heart heal a little.

Date: 2008-06-14 12:16 am (UTC)Oh, the bar scene really is so lovely. I need to watch it again because, yeah, I need to watch it again ::grin:: but if I remember correctly, they're not even looking at each other and still they're smiling away. It's a nice way of conveying how in tune and connected they are and how it requires very little maintenance from either one. Very sweet ...
The balcony scene is getting some much deserved attention and I'm with you, I hope somebody writes it up - the sooner the better.
I don't think it's a coincidence that so many BBM fans have taken to Shelter. As brilliant as the film is, that need for a happy ending - especially in the wake of a real life tragedy - is a near physical ache. I also think that it's no coincidence that the makers of Shelter wanted to leave no doubt at all that Zach, Shaun and Cody would be together happily. I could have easily believed they were going to have a good life together just from the scene where they watch Jeanne drive away but the added on scene of them playing on the beach literally sealed it with a kiss. Such a sweet thing to do not only for the characters but also for us.

Date: 2008-06-14 06:16 am (UTC)I do believe Zach starts falling when they are talking on the phone and Shaun tells Zach to bring Cody to dinner. That's not it but it leads up to Zach totally falling in love when He and Cody come into the kitchen and Shaun immediately picks up Cody and asks him what he wants for dinner. Zach says don't worry he will eat whatever and Shaun cracks a joke with Cody (finally I am getting to my point), the look on Zach's face when he is watching those two is amazing. He realizes that Shaun accepts ALL of him.
Do you know how hard it is to find not only your soul mate but one that accepts your kids (or nephew in this case) as their own?

Date: 2008-06-14 09:25 pm (UTC)Exactly! By comparison, it makes me think of the phone call that Zach has with Tori when she's at the party. She asks what's he doing and says something like, what do you think? and her answer is, "babysitting" like it's a common occurrence that she's had to deal with. I'm sure there were times when he was suppose to see Tori and had Cody left with him at the last minute and they both might of felt that babysitting Cody was something that got in the way. Shaun's mindset just completely overrules that. You've got Cody? Bring him over! It's suddenly a non-issue. This little boy that Zach loves so much is no longer viewed as hindrance. And I think it's also really obvious to Zach that Shaun's interest in Cody was genuine and not something Shaun was playing at for the short term. I imagine that it was hard for Zach not to begin to fall in love when the object of his affection is so good to the object of his affection.
Because I can't help myself - an image:
p.s.
I hope I didn't sound like I was bashing Tori because I really do love her.

Date: 2008-06-14 03:22 pm (UTC)But I think my favorite part is when Shaun opens the door and Zach launches himself at him. Love it. Could watch it over and over. Love Zach's pacing, and the passion in his eyes when he sees Shaun. Not to mention the music! Perfect.
