Just to get the ball rolling ...

Hello and welcome to The Shelter Diner - named after the busy Pacific Diner that Zach works at. It's my hope that people who have enjoyed the movie will come here to discuss it and share their art and enthusiasm. Here's a minor example of how things can go but, please consider it only a starting point:
When I watch Zach skateboarding at the beginning of the film I can't help but smile over the thought that at that point he has no idea whatsoever how profoundly his life is going to change. There is this amazing journey in the works even as he is just trying to get through the day.
I'm looking forward to hearing from you!

And er, thats it from me for now, unless of course you want a 20,000 word essay on why I love this film.

I think Shelter was made for multiple viewings since the first scene with Zach skating home is all the more meaningful after you see where he ends up. He is such a boy at the beginning - despite all of his responsibilities - and we get to see him grow into this loving, creative, vibrant man. When Shaun asks him, "What changed?" and he answers, "I did" it's no small truth.
I'm so glad you found this site and are enjoying it. That's exactly what I was hoping for! As for your 20,000 word essay on why you love this film: Bring it on! ::big grin::

That's so true. He's just going on with his life, trying to be something for everyone else in his life, and then comes the moment when he has to decide to do something for himself. Of course, being Zach, he still fits Cody into his life.
Also prophetic, I thought, was the first scene between Zach and Shaun when they're deciding to go surfing:
Shaun: I suppose there’s still a few things I could teach you.
Zach: Oh.
Shaun: You’ll soon learn, butterfly.
Zach: Perhaps master underestimates student. Bring it on, city boy.

I just really admire how this film so deftly accomplishes showing us Zach going from a stifled and aimless kid to this vibrant and steadfast young man. And yes, their first scene together hints at so much. And while Shaun might initially be the teacher it really looks they they have this great influence on each other.
Regarding that scene: I'm probably just out of the loop but are they making references to Star Wars? When I first heard them I thought they were riffing on Kung Fu and changing grasshopper to butterfly.

Absolutely! I loved that they both encouraged each other, Shaun urging Zach to go to school and practice his art, and Zach telling Shaun he was a good writer and he liked his book.
I presumed it was a Kung Fu teacher/student riff, as well. *shrug* What do I know? *g*
