My Most Memorable Christmas
Man, I love Christmas! That’s gotta be my favorite day of the year – and not just because I always get lots of presents! I just like everything about it. There’s no school! Both my dads are home for two weeks on holiday break. Uncle Gabe always comes for a little while, and, then there’s my favorite thing –holiday basketball tournaments!!! But there was one Christmas that was special for several reasons: (Two Christmases ago)
I’m sitting here in the family room right now tossing my basketball up in the air and catching it in my hands over and over just waiting for that one special present I’ve been asking for for four years – a basketball hoop over the garage door! Ever since I started playing on the school’s midget team in 4th grade, that’s been my number one wish. Since I was already too old for Santa Claus, I threw all my begging at Zach and Shaun, but, so far, no luck! I just knew they’d cave this year. Shaun was afraid the noise of the bouncing basketball would disturb the neighbors, and Zach always gave in when Shaun made a good point. So, so far, no rim for Codes! But I could always hope, right?
“Cody, you about ready to go to church?”, Zach asked from the doorway. I noticed he was wearing a suit and tie for the occasion so that meant I better get out the shirt, tie and good shoes, too. This was going to be a very special Christmas for Zach, since he was going to present the fantastic manger scene he had made to the church at Christmas Mass. He was a little up-tight about being in the spotlight, but Shaun and me kept telling him all month to be proud, stand tall and accept the thanks of the parish. Everybody was going to be crazy about this manger – oops! Zach said I should call it a “crèche” since that’s the proper name for it. It’s got about ten buildings and at least thirty 18- inch figures and installed in the middle of a wall of fir tree branches, will cover almost the whole left-hand corner of the front of church. This is one time I won’t mind going to midnight mass.
About twenty minutes later, Shaun, Zach and me headed out to church. The crèche was carefully packed in the back of the jeep, and we needed to get there early to set it up the way Zach wanted it. This turned out to be really neat because the choir was doing a final run-through of Christmas carols before Mass.
Right on cue, at twelve o’clock, midnight, Mass began with every candle in the church lit, including little candles held by each person there. The glow of the lights made the crèche look like a complete village, including a stable with an empty hay stall, just waiting for the Baby Jesus.
Finally, half-way through the Mass, it was time for the pastor to bring the figure of the Baby to his little bed stuffed with hay. Then it was complete – the whole crèche shone before our eyes. I noticed Shaun’s eyes were wet; he had one arm around Zach’s waist and one around mine. Zach was smiling, and I was the happiest thirteen year old boy in America.
As Mass quickly drew to an end, the pastor went over to the crèche with the mic and announced that this one-of-a-kind crèche had been made and donated to the church by one of the most talented young instructors at CalTec, Zach Martin. Then he moved aside some fur tree branches and showed the golden plaque under the crèche that read: Donated by the Andrews-Martin Family, 2013 AD.
Everybody clapped. Some people even whistled and hooted – just like at a basketball game. Zach was standing tall, beaming at the crowd, so proud of his beautiful crèche. I will never, ever forget his face that night.
As we walked home from church, we relived everything that had happened, and told Zach over and over what a great artist he was until I think he finally believed us. (He always has trouble believing he’s as good as he is!) That’s all that anybody was thinking about when we turned the corner at our driveway.
Then I spied the hoop! There it hung! Right in the middle of the garage door, bright, shiny with a red net, just waiting for a boy and his basketball. But how did it get there? It wasn’t there when we left for church, and Zach and Shaun were with me the whole while. (That is one mystery that has never been solved for me to this day. When I beg Zach or Shaun to tell me who put the hoop up, they just look at me, shrug, and mumble something about Santa Claus.) I couldn’t believe my eyes. While I stood there in shock, Shaun went inside the house and came back out with the basketball and tossed it to my waiting hands. A few dribbles, and in the net it went! Wow! What a feeling! My very own basketball court ! Zach loosened his tie, handed his jacket to Shaun, and we had a quick game of one-on-one, with Shaun cheering for both of us when we made a basket. We probably looked like a bunch of nuts playing basketball in our dress-up clothes at two a.m., but we were having the time of our lives, or at least, I was.
Well, that was the most memorable Christmas I ever had and not just because I got the basketball hoop. I was just so proud of Zach and his gift to the church and the way the people reacted to it. And I was just so happy to have these two dads who made everyday of my life special. I think I knew that night that nothing could ever get any better for me. I had the very best and they felt the same way about me. Yeah, we had lots of Christmas peace and love. Who could ever ask for anything more?
