Definitely had some shades of feeling from their break-up. He probably had the main character (himself) describing the pain and hurt of that horrible night...and Zach sees enough of himself in the boyfriend's character to wince, knowing what pain he cause Shaun.
Or it could be something completely different that I haven't thought of yet. :0)
