That's so true. He's just going on with his life, trying to be something for everyone else in his life, and then comes the moment when he has to decide to do something for himself. Of course, being Zach, he still fits Cody into his life.
Also prophetic, I thought, was the first scene between Zach and Shaun when they're deciding to go surfing:
Shaun: I suppose there’s still a few things I could teach you. Zach: Oh. Shaun: You’ll soon learn, butterfly. Zach: Perhaps master underestimates student. Bring it on, city boy.
