All That I Want
Shaun sat on the beach watching Nathan while Zach and Cody surfed. He couldn’t believe that his two year anniversary with Zach was coming up in a month. Time had really flown by. He still wondered how he had gotten so lucky as to get Zach.
As he had watched Zach grow up, he had suspected that he was gay. When Zach was a teenager, Shaun had developed a crush on him, but, at the time, Zach was jailbait. When Zach graduated from high school and was no longer jailbait, he was dating Tori exclusively and it really looked like he was going to marry her and it was painful to watch. That was one of the many reasons that he didn’t return to Laguna for a few years.
But then, when he had broken up with his ex, and he really had nowhere to go except for Laguna, the stars had aligned. He had found Zach hunkier than ever, but at first he still didn’t think he had a shot at him. But then he found out that Zach’s relationship with Tori was on the rocks and they were taking a break. Then, when Zach was asked if he was a fag, Zach did not deny it. Finally, he found out that Zach had known about him being gay and was still interested in his life.
But he still didn’t know what had inspired him to kiss Zach that first time. He supposed a lot of factors were involved. First there was the beer; they had both consumed a lot of beer that day. There was also his suspicion that Zach was interested. He supposed he somehow knew that Zach would never make the first move so it was up to him. To top it off, he had REALLY wanted Zach.
Zach had been so skittish after that first kiss that Shaun had wondered if he would ever see him again. When he had gone to the beach and tried to talk to Zach about the kiss, Zach hardly let him get a word in edgewise, so when he finally got to talk to Zach, he didn’t even bring it up. How he had gotten so damn lucky as to actually land Zach was still a mystery to him.
Shaun looked at Nathan, who was sitting on the edge of the blanket stuffing sand into his mouth. Shaun, a bit embarrassed that he had been so lost in his own thoughts that he hadn’t noticed what the little munchkin had been up to, quickly put his finger into his son’s mouth in order to remove the sand before he choked. “Stay next to Papa,” said Shaun to the baby, but he knew it was useless. Now that Nathan was 6 months old and crawling, he was going everywhere and getting into everything.
Shaun remembered when Zach had told him that Cody was five and said that time really flies, Shaun had agreed with him. But he had thought at the time that Zach was referring to time in general; he hadn’t realized just how fast kids grow up. Hell, he suspected that Cody was already on his first crush.
Just then, Zach and Cody returned from the water, surfboards in hand. Shaun looked at Zach. He couldn’t help admiring how his wetsuit hugged his body. He looked at Cody and noticed that Cody was just about ready for a new wetsuit, he was growing so fast.
As Nathan attempted to crawl away again, Zach sat down next to Shaun. Before either of them could say anything, however, Cody came up to them and, pointing, said “
Shaun, his thoughts still fresh on his mind, but knowing it was hopeless not to get Cody to say hi to the girl that he thought he had a crush on, said “Sure, and why don’t you invite her over here to build a sandcastle?”
Cody rolled his eyes and said “Pop, sandcastles are for babies!” That was Cody’s latest thing, everything was for babies. A few weeks ago, he had informed them that he was no longer going to call them “Daddy” and “Papa” since those titles were for babies.
Shaun looked at Zach, who was now holding Nathan, and asked him “Do you think he’s got a crush on
“Without a doubt,” was Zach’s reply.
“I didn’t know it could start so young,” said Shaun shaking his head.
“I had a crush on you at that age,” said Zach.
Shaun was shocked. “Really?” he asked.
“Really,” said Zach.
“So,” said Shaun, his mind getting back to the anniversary, “What would you like to do for our anniversary?”
“I don’t know,” said Zach, “I haven’t really thought about it. Maybe we could go see Annie. I read in the paper that it’s playing again.”
Shaun thought that was a really bad idea. For one thing, Zach hated musical theatre. For another thing, he wasn’t overly fond of it himself. And finally, his ex had loved Annie and had dragged him to see it three times.
Shaun decided not to share these sentiments with Zach. He decided to see if he could come up with a better idea. So he said “I’ll think of something better.”
As Shaun drove home, Zach sat in the passenger seat while Nathan and Cody were in the back. Nathan was sleeping. Cody, as usual, was asking questions about everything. He had just answered “Why don’t eyelashes need haircuts?” When he heard Cody ask “Papa, why aren’t you and Daddy married?”
Shaun was not sure how to answer that question. Should he say something about the asinine voters of
Hoping he would get some clue as to what to say, he looked at Zach. Zach was looking at him. That’s when it hit him; he really did want to marry Zach. But, he realized, first he had to answer Cody’s question. So he said “I don’t know, Buddy. I guess we just haven’t gotten around to it yet.”
Later that night, after both boys were asleep and Zach was busy working on a painting, Shaun started thinking. He was surprised at how hard it had hit him that he wanted to marry Zach. He couldn’t get the idea out of his mind. He decided that Zach would never make the first move so it would be up to him to propose.
Now was just the issue of logistics. When, where, and how would he do it? Certainly not when Cody and/or Nathan was around, that was a given. Probably the best time to do it would be on their anniversary. He quickly decided that he didn’t want to do it in a restaurant or any other public place since he felt that something that intimate should take place in private. He didn’t want to do it in bed; he wanted something more romantic than that. And just how would he go about doing it? He liked the idea of getting down on bended knee, but that’s where it started to fall apart. The fact was that he was proposing to another man and men, gay or straight, do not wear engagement rings.
He decided that he would look stupid on bended knee without a ring so he started brainstorming other ideas. Maybe he could do something with food. Yes, that was it; he’d cook Zach the best meal of his life! He’d go all out with foie gras. No, foie gras was a bad idea since Zach had never had foie gras and therefore might not like it. He didn’t want to risk Zach not liking the meal. What did Zach like that was romantic? He knew Zach liked beef tenderloin. That was it; he’d make a roast beef tenderloin. He’d pair it with asparagus since asparagus was an aphrodisiac. He’d also roast some potatoes; Zach liked potatoes. He’d pair it with a Cabernet Sauvignon.
For dessert, well, he’d have to do something with chocolate. He should probably include raspberries too since they went so well with chocolate. He scanned his mind for ideas of what he could do with raspberries and chocolate. He remembered that somewhere in his recipe box he had a recipe for raspberry that was to die for. He’d make that. And he’d melt some chocolate and use it to write “Will you marry me?” around the edge of Zach’s plate.
But one thing was still nagging at him. He still really wanted to get down on one knee. He decided that after he gave Zach the dessert he could still get down on one knee and hold Zach’s hand while he proposed.
The only thing left to decide now was how to get Zach out of the way during the preparation. He knew Zach had class on their anniversary, but he would be back by
The big day rolled around. After Zach and Cody had gone, he went to get a manicure. He knew it was corny, but he figured that since he was presenting his hand in marriage, his hand should look its best. While the manicurist did his nails and made funny faces at Nathan, he started to get nervous. What if everything come off perfect? What if Zach rejected him? He pushed those fears out of his mind.
He had gotten the next door neighbor, a sweet little old lady named Martha, to baby-sit. After he got Cody of the bus, he dropped off both him and Nathan. As he gave Martha emergency numbers and other instructions, he started to get nervous again.
When he got home he started cooking. During a free moment, he showered and put on a new sweater and a pair of jeans that knew made his butt look cute. He had thought about wearing a suit, but had decided that was a bit too formal for dinner at home. When Zach came home, he tried to sound casual as he said “Hey, happy anniversary.”
“Happy anniversary,” replied Zach. “Where are the boys?”
“Oh, I dropped them off at Martha’s so we could have some alone time,” responded Shaun. “Why don’t you go shower while I cook dinner?” asked Shaun, trying his best to be casual.
While Zach was showering, Shaun set the dining room table. They only really ate in the dining room on special occasions, but Shaun decided that this was a special occasion. To set the mood, he strategically placed a few tea-light candles on the table and lit them.
Zach came out of the bedroom just as everything was ready. Shaun poured two glasses of wine and told Zach to sit at the dining room table before heading into the kitchen to grab some appetizers. When Shaun returned to the dining room with the plate of bruschetta and stuffed mushrooms, he found Zach was sitting at the table sipping his wine. Shaun gave him a kiss before putting the plate on the table and having a seat for himself.
“What’s this?” asked Zach.
“Appetizers,” replied Shaun. He was pleased to have caught Zach off-guard.
“You didn’t have to go all out,” said Zach.
“I wanted to,” said Shaun.
As they ate the appetizers, Shaun was relieved to find that Zach liked them. He supposed that he had been a bit silly in thinking that Zach wouldn’t like them, since Zach never complained about either bruschetta or stuffed mushrooms. He still, however, was a bundle of nerves.
After the appetizers came the entrée. As they ate, Zach suggested they not talk about anything kid-related since it was so rare that they had alone time. Shaun agreed that it was a good idea. Unfortunately, Shaun found that both he and Zach had trouble coming up with topics other than kid related stuff. As he wracked his brain for topics of conversation, Zach mentioned that Gabe had called him today. While he didn’t particularly want to discuss his brother, he decided that at least it wasn’t kid related, so he asked “What did Gabe have to say?”
“He was upset because Larry wanted him to go to grad school.”
Shaun couldn’t figure out why that would upset Gabe. After all, Gabe was the ultimate party boy and the more time in college, the more time he had to party. So he said “And this upsets him why?”
“Well it doesn’t, not exactly.”
“Well what exactly is upsetting him about grad school?”
“Seems that Larry told him that if he didn’t get a job, that he wouldn’t pay for grad school.”
Shaun knew that Gabe had never worked a day in his life, so he said “It’s about time his free ride is over.”
“Well Gabe doesn’t see it that way.”
“I’ll call him later,” said Shaun. “Time for dessert,” he added, noticing that both plates were empty.
In the kitchen, he had to pause for a moment. The time had finally come. He hoped to hell that he didn’t fuck this up. Well, it was now or never. He grabbed the two plates and went back into the dining room.
First, he put his own plate at his spot, and then he lowered Zach’s in front of him. As Zach looked at the plate, reading the writing, Shaun dropped to one knee. He could feel his heart beating, waiting for Zach to say something. Finally, at long last, Zach looked at him and said “Oh my God, Shaun.”
Shaun took Zach’s hand in both of his own and said “Before you say anything, I want to tell you something. When I first met you, you were young; very young. I watched you grow into the man you are today. You are kind, intelligent, and passionate. You are a great father. You are talented. You are beautiful. I can’t imagine my life without you. Please, Zach, marry me.”
Shaun felt like his heart was in his throat as he waited for Zach’s response. Finally, Zach said “Shaun, I love you. I don’t know how to say this,” Shaun started to feel his stomach churn in fear. “Shaun… yes.”
Shaun was startled. He had been sure that Zach was about to say no. It was a few seconds before he managed to say “Really? Are you sure?”
“Yes!” said Zach smiling.
Shaun was overjoyed. He was jubilant. He wasn’t quite sure what to do, so he did what came naturally to him; he planted a kiss on Zach’s lips. He felt Zach’s hand on the back of his head. He gently pressed his tongue to Zach’s lips. When Zach’s mouth parted, he slipped his tongue in.
Dishes and food forgotten, they stumbled towards the bedroom. They stopped every couple of steps to kiss and take off various articles of clothing. By the time they reached the bedroom, Shaun was naked except for his boxer-briefs, which Zach was doing his best to remove while simultaneously kiss him. Shaun, in turn, was trying to think of the best way to get Zach out of his boxers without actually removing his lips from him.
They tumbled onto the bed, underwear finally off. Shaun immediately started kissing Zach’s neck. He quickly kissed his way down Zach’s chest. He had the urge to kiss Zach’s back so he whispered “roll over.” Zach eagerly complied.
Shaun slowly, tenderly, kissed Zach’s back, gradually making his way lower. When he reached Zach’s ass, he paused for just a moment to admire how good it looked. He resumed kissing. When he reached Zach’s hole, he tenderly extended his tongue. He heard Zach gasp, but he continued licking.
When he heard Zach let out a small groan, he stopped licking and placed a finger on the vacated hole. Carefully, he inserted the finger. He heard Zach moan his name. When the resistance on his finger lessened, he gently removed the finger and started again, this time with two fingers.
As he wiggled his fingers around, Shaun licked Zach’s ear. He could feel Zach squirming against him and he knew Zach was close. To keep Zach from coming, he paused in his manipulations. When Zach stopped squirming, Shaun removed the two fingers and went in with three.
Shaun felt his own need getting greater. With his unoccupied hand, he reached for the lube. He removed the fingers from Zach in order to squeeze the lube onto Zach’s butt. He repositioned himself so that he was at Zach’s entrance.
Shaun gasped as he entered Zach. He couldn’t believe how tight Zach still was. He held still, giving Zach a moment to adjust. At long last, he started to move.
He heard Zach say, in a half moan, “Oh Shaun.”
“Zach, oh Zach… I love you!” he replied.
“I love you too!”
His heart was filled with warmth as he fucked the man he loved. Eventually, when he was nearly there, he heard Zach let out a long groan. He knew Zach was coming. The knowledge sent him over the edge; he saw stars.
Completely spent, he rolled off of Zach. “I love you,” he said. “That was incredible,” he added. It wasn’t that the sex they had before was bad; it was just that it had been somehow enhanced by the knowledge that Zach loved him and wanted to be with him forever.
“I know what you mean,” said Zach sleepily. “What about the dishes?”
Shaun did not want to get out of bed for anything. This moment was too special. So he said “I’ll take care of them in the morning.”
“Shaun?” he heard Zach ask.
“Mmm?” he replied.
“I want you to know that you’re all that I want.”
The next day, Shaun was extremely grateful that it was Saturday. That meant that he didn’t have to run around like a crazy man cleaning up and trying to get Cody off to school. Although, he had to admit, he didn’t exactly sleep in either. The habit of getting up early was too ingrained in his internal alarm clock. By eight, he had cleaned up the mess from the previous night and Zach had just returned from picking up the boys when he decided that they should tell Cody they were getting married.
He walked into the nursery, where Zach was changing Nathan’s diaper, and said “I think we should tell Cody.”
“Tell me what?” said Cody from the doorway.
“Hey, Buddy,” said Zach, smiling at Cody, “Didn’t see you there.” Shaun watched as Zach fastened the diaper tapes, snapped up the bottom of the onesie, and pulled up Nathan’s pants in the span of about five seconds. He was impressed. It always took him at least ten seconds to do all that.
“What do you want to tell me?” asked Cody again.
Shaun looked at Zach, but didn’t get any feedback because Zach was in the process of disposing of the dirty diaper. He decided this was good news and shouldn’t beat around the bush. So he said “We’re getting married!”
“You are?” asked Cody sounding surprised.
“Yeah, Codes, we are,” said Zach as he picked Nathan up off the changing table.
“Why are you getting married?” asked Cody.
“Because,” said Shaun, remembering his previous conversation with Cody about marriage, “we decided that we should get around to it.”
Half an hour later, Nathan was sitting in his high chair. Shaun was mixing rice cereal with formula as a frozen cube of pureed pears was warming in the microwave. Shaun was quite proud of his baby food making skills, even if only Zach appreciated them. Cody wandered into the kitchen and said “Hey Papa.”
Shaun decided not to remind Cody of his vow not to call him “Papa.” He was growing up to fast as it was. So he said “Hey Cody. What’s up?”
“I want to go surfing,” said Cody.
“That sounds like a good idea,” said Shaun. “Maybe we can go this afternoon.”
“I want to go now,” whined Cody.
“I can’t take you now,” Shaun patiently explained. “I got to feed your brother now.” The microwave beeped and Shaun retrieved the pears.
“But I want to go now!” whined Cody.
“What’s with the whining?” asked Shaun as he found a baby-sized spoon.
“I’m not whining!” insisted Cody.
“Yes you are,” said Shaun as he took the pears, cereal, and spoon over to the table. In the two weeks that Nathan had been eating solid food, Shaun had learned not to put the food on the highchair tray.
“I want to go surfing now!” insisted Cody in a louder tone of voice.
Shaun decided that this attitude would not be tolerated so he said “Cody, go to your room.”
“I don’t want to go to my room!” Cody practically yelled.
Shaun was quickly losing patience, so he said “Cody, if you don’t go to your room by the time I count to three, we aren’t going surfing today at all!”
Cody stuck out his bottom lip and remained rooted to the spot.
“One…” started Shaun. Cody did not move. “Two…” Shaun continued. Cody quickly ran out of the room. “Two and a half…” Shaun said for good measure, in a voice loud enough to carry all over the apartment. He heard the door to Cody’s room slam. “Three!” he finished.
Shaun looked at Nathan, who was leaning forward in his high chair, doing his best to reach the food. “Okay, Nathan,” said Shaun, “I know you’re hungry. On today’s menu is rice cereal and pears.” Shaun dipped the spoon into the bowl of rice cereal and said “Bon appetit.”
A few spoonfuls later, Zach walked into the kitchen. “What’s going on with Cody?” asked Zach.
“What do you mean?” asked Shaun, wondering if Zach was referring to Cody’s latest incident, the fact that Cody was now back to calling them “Daddy” and “Papa,” or Cody’s opinion that babysitters were “not cool” and he was too old for one anyway.
“I mean, why is Cody in his room, sobbing?”
“Oh. He wanted to go surfing and I told him maybe we could go this afternoon because I was feeding Nathan now and he practically had a meltdown. I sent him to his room and he wouldn’t go so I threatened not to take him surfing at all. I think we’re having some sibling rivalry.”
“I’ll go talk to him,” said Zach.
After Nathan was done eating and Shaun had cleaned everything up, he remembered that he wanted to call Gabe. He set Nathan down in the living room to play and pulled out his phone. As he dialed, he decided that he would talk to Gabe about Larry wanting him to get a job before talking about weddings, baby food, sibling rivalry, or anything else going on in his own life.
“Hey Bro!” answered Gabe.
“Hey Bro!” replied Shaun. “I hear Larry wants you to get a job.”
“Yeah,” said Gabe. “It’s so not fair!”
“How is it not fair?” asked Shaun, “Most people your age have jobs.”
“Well it was Larry’s idea that I go to grad school, so he should be paying all my living expenses while I’m there!”
“Uh, Dude, he’s paying your tuition. That’s more than he did for me,” said Shaun, remembering how he’d worked two jobs and took out a student loan when he was in grad school.
“Well he was mad at you,” said Gabe.
“Yeah, and he’s still mad at me,” replied Shaun. Larry had never quite forgiven him for being gay.
“What are you talking about?” asked Gabe. “Didn’t he say you could stay in the Laguna house as long as you wanted, after your last breakup?”
“Gabe, he only said that because Mom made him,” said Shaun. Then, feeling like the conversation was getting off track, he said “But what does all that have to do with you getting a job and taking some responsibility?”
“It means that I’ll have to get up at a decent hour and not party so much,” said Gabe sounding mournful.
“Welcome to adulthood. We all need to grow up sooner or later.”
There was silence on the line for a minute before Shaun heard Gabe ask “So how are you?”
“Oh, I got news!” said Shaun.
“Oh? You dumped Zach and decided to start dating girls?” said Gabe teasingly.
“Yeah right; Zach and I are going to get married.”
“You are? Really?”
“Really.”
“Well when’s the wedding?”
“Uh, don’t know yet,” said Shaun, realizing that they had yet to work out a single detail.
“Well where’s the wedding going to be?”
“We haven’t worked that out yet.”
“Is Larry going to walk you down the aisle?”
“Fuck off.” Shaun knew that Gabe was just teasing, but it still hurt him a little because he knew that if he asked Larry to walk him down the aisle, something he would never do to begin with because he was a guy, Larry would say no. Shaun knew that Larry would come to the wedding because his mother would make him, but he knew Larry well enough to know that Larry would want as little to do with the wedding as possible. Gabe’s wedding, if Gabe ever settled down long enough to actually get married, would be a totally different story.
“Sorry,” said Gabe. Shaun realized that some of his bitterness towards Larry must have been conveyed when he had told Gabe to fuck off. “So how are my nephews?” asked Gabe, changing the subject.
“Well Nathan’s good,” said Shaun, “He started eating solid food a couple of weeks ago. I’ve been making all the baby food from scratch.”
“You do know they sell that stuff in jars?” asked Gabe.
“Yeah, I know, but I’d rather make it myself.”
“Why?”
“Because it’s better nutritionally,” explained Shaun.
“Okay, Weirdo,” said Gabe. “And how’s Cody?”
“Well, he’s got a crush on a girl.”
“That’ll make Larry happy,” said Gabe.
“Why would Larry care?” As far as Shaun knew, Larry had never once expressed any interest whatsoever in either of his kids.
“I overheard him telling Mom, when I went to visit them, that he was sure both Cody and Nathan would turn out gay because they are being raised by two gay guys.”
“Okay,” said Shaun. He had long since given up on educating Larry about gay people. “Anyway,” he continued, “I think we’re experiencing a little sibling rivalry.”
“What the hell’s that mean?” asked Gabe.
“It means that Cody is jealous of Nathan.”
“Why would Cody be jealous?”
“Well last time it was because I couldn’t take Cody surfing the minute he wanted to go because I had to feed Nathan.”
“That sucks.”
“Yeah,” agreed Shaun. Then, on impulse, he decided to invite Gabe over. So he said “By the way, how would you like to come visit us? Maybe next week?”
“That would be cool if I didn’t have to sleep on the couch.”
“You don’t have to. You could sleep in Cody’s room.”
“On the top bunk? No thanks,” was Gabe’s reply.
“Not the top bunk. Cody has moved up there. You can have the bottom bunk.”
“Well, that’s not as bad as the top bunk. Okay, I’ll come,” said Gabe.
“Cool. See you next week.”
“See you next week.”
After he hung up, Shaun looked at Nathan. Nathan was trying to stuff an entire rattle into his mouth. Nathan looked up at Shaun and beamed at him. With that smile, Shaun’s entire world brightened.
That night, after Cody and Nathan were both asleep, Shaun broached the subject of the wedding to Zach. “So when and where would you like to get married?”
“I guess in a couple months, when we go to
“That works,” said Shaun. “But it will have to be a small wedding,” he continued, “Because I don’t know how many people, realistically, would be able to make it. I think we should think about who we really want there and only invite them.”
“That’s reasonable,” said Zach. “Who do we know that we want there for sure?”
“Gabe,” said Shaun, “and my mom and Larry. Well not so much Larry, but my mom would be offended if we didn’t invite him. And we’d have to invite Erik, since he let us stay at his house there last year. And we should invite
“What about Andrea and Will?” Will was Cody’s best friend and his mother, Andrea, was a close friend of theirs as well.
“Good thinking,” said Shaun. Then, thinking, he said “What about your Dad?”
“Don’t be ridiculous,” said Zach. Zach’s dad didn’t even know that Zach was gay, much less that he was living with Shaun and together they had adopted Jeanne’s two kids. Besides, even if he did know, there was no way he would be able to make to the wedding since he had a whole bunch of health issues.
“I’m not even going to bother asking about Jeanne,” said Shaun. He and Zach both believed that it would be too traumatic for Cody to see Jeanne until he asked to see her. Besides, even if it wasn’t trauma inducing, they’d have to invite Alan, who, if possible, was worse than Jeanne.
“Do you think we should invite Mark and Jeff?” asked Zach. While Mark and Jeff were basically friends with benefits and about as mature as Gabe, Shaun had known them since around the time he had come out. Shaun also knew that they really cared about him and wanted him to be happy.
“Sure,” said Shaun, “I think that’s a great idea.” Then he thought of someone that neither of them had seen in a couple of years. “How would you like to invite Tori?” he asked Zach.
“Nah,” said Zach, “She wouldn’t be able to afford it. Besides, I think it would be awkward for both her and me.”
“Understood,” said Shaun. He really did understand. After all, it wasn’t like he was inviting any of his exes to their wedding.
“Oh, by the way, I spoke to Gabe today,” said Shaun, changing the subject.
“Oh?” said Zach with interest.
“Yeah. I told him we were getting married and I invited him over next week.”
“What did he say?” asked Zach.
“About the wedding or about coming over?”
“Both.”
“Oh, well he’s coming over, but he wants to crash in Cody’s room this time.”
“That’s cool,” said Zach.
“Yeah. And he wanted to know if Larry was going to walk me down the aisle.”
“I would’ve told him to fuck off,” said Zach.
“As a matter of fact, that’s exactly what I told him,” said Shaun.
Gabe arrived a week later, as planned. Soon, they were all settled in the living room, chatting. Gabe was sitting in a chair borrowed from the dining room. Shaun was sitting on the couch next to Zach, his arm casually draped over his shoulders. Cody was on the floor, playing with some of his transformers and Nathan was happily jumping away in his jumperoo. “So,” said Gabe, “How’s the wedding planning going?”
“It’s going good,” replied Shaun.
“Fill me in on some of the details,” said Gabe.
“The wedding is going to be in Provinctown,” said Zach.
“Isn’t that like a gay
“Yep,” replied Zach. “Anyway, the wedding will be in
At that point, Cody lost interest in his transformers and went over to Nathan in the jumperoo. He started to reach out his hands towards the infant seat. “No Cody,” said Shaun in horror.
“But I want to make him jump really high!” said Cody.
“Cody, if you do that, you could hurt him,” said Shaun.
Just then, the dog wandered into the room. “I have an idea,” said Shaun, the dog giving him inspiration, “Why don’t you go read that book that Mark and Jeff gave you as a gift, ‘The Day the Dog Dressed Like Dad’?”
“That reminds me,” said Gabe, “I brought you all gifts.”
Gabe’s gifts turned out to be t-shirts for all of them, including the dog. The dog got a light blue t-shirt that said “I love my two gay daddies.” Cody got a white t-shirt with black writing that said “I love my two gay daddies.” Nathan got a white onesie with blue writing that said “I love my two gay daddies.” Shaun and Zach each got a white t-shirt that said “Proud Dad,” the proud being rainbow colored and the dad being black.
Shaun wasn’t sure what to say. While he knew they could really only wear these shirts to gay pride, and perhaps P-town, at least they were family friendly. Maybe Gabe was finally getting it.
While Shaun was still trying to think of something to say, he heard Zach say “Thanks Gabe.” Zach really sounded like he really meant it. Shaun watched as Zach and Gabe hugged each other, then he gave Gabe a hug himself.
“Hey, guys,” said Gabe, sounding uncomfortable, “I didn’t really give it that much thought.”
Time went by. They went to P-town, accompanied by everyone they had invited to their wedding. They arrived on a Saturday. On Monday, Shaun and Zach went to the
Finally, the big day rolled around. After Shaun and Zach dressed themselves in their suits, they went to work on Cody and Nathan. It was actually easier than they thought it would be. Nathan was too young to voice an opinion on what he was wearing so that made dressing him rather simple. The big challenge with Nathan was drool; these days he drooled on everything he wore. In the end, Shaun and Zach put a bib around his neck even though it ruined the formalness of the outfit. Cody was surprisingly easy to dress. While at first he didn’t want to wear a suit, after Zach had explained that everyone there, except for Andrea and Shaun’s mother, would be wearing a suit, Cody put his on.
The ceremony itself was simple. Shaun and Zach walked down the aisle together, followed by Cody, who was proudly pushing Nathan in his stroller.
The ceremony started with the JP saying a few things, followed by the vows. Shaun was grateful that they had opted not to write their own vows. Shaun felt the ceremony was more unified this way.
After the vows came the “I do’s.” After the “I do’s” came the ring ceremony. As Shaun placed the ring on Zach’s finger, he couldn’t help but marvel again at how lucky he was. When Zach placed the ring on Shaun’s finger, Shaun felt pure joy.
Finally there was the pronouncement of marriage. When the JP said “By the power vested in me by the
After the wedding, they went back to the house to change out of their formalwear. As Shaun and Zach changed, Zach said “I can’t believe it.”
“Can’t believe what?” asked Shaun.
“I can’t believe we’re married. It’s surreal.”
“I know,” said Shaun.
“Shaun?” asked Zach.
“Yes?”
“Why did you marry me? I mean, you could have just about any guy in the world and you picked me. Why?”
Shaun went over to Zach and, looking him in the eye, said “Zach, listen, I’ve had plenty of guys in the past, but none of them compare to you. You are responsible. You are mature way beyond your years. You are a great father. You are sensitive. You are considerate. You are intelligent. You are passionate. You are a talented artist. You are beautiful. You are everything I have been looking for in a man my entire life. You are all that I want. That’s why I married you.”
“Shaun, you are all that I want too,” said Zach.
